FANAA

Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) is a blind Kashmiri woman who travels for the first time with her friends to New Delhi to perform in a ceremony for Republic Day. On her journey, she meets Rehaan Khan (Aamir Khan), a tour guide who flirts with her. Although her friends warn Zooni about him, she falls in love. On her last night in Delhi, Rehaan and Zooni spend the night together and end up in bed. As Zooni is leaving the next day, Rehaan comes and takes her away with him. Her parents arrive in Delhi to arrange their marriage. Zooni has a procedure done that helps her see again, but when she comes out of surgery, she finds out that Rehaan was killed in a bomb blast in the city.

Trust me, nothing was spoiled in that synopsis. In fact, it clears things up a little (a lot).

One of Bollywood’s favourites, Fanaa. I understand why, now let me enlighten you. This film comprises of three main elements, my personal mantra, plot, personality of characters and perfect music. The old Bollywood films get a pass for a lot of things, unlike the newer age of Hindi film. It is hard to backlash a film that never had anything wrong with it when it came out, now looking back in a professional manner, Hindi film has progressed a lot. Nevertheless, we will embrace all sides of it.

Fanaa literally means destroyed. Everything was destroyed here. A woman and a mans love for each other, the trust of a child, the bond between a father and son and the purity of love. Decipher it however you want. Love is over fantasized, even I agree with it. Movies and films make us forget that love is not really like that. This movie kind of comes as a wake-up call. Revolving around a blind protagonist, it portrays how even people that know nothing of how the world looks like how an expectation of love. I am not surprised, seeing how 99.9% movies are about love and romance, there is nothing left to think of in the minute existence of being a human. But we need to understand that all of it is a portrayal of dramatization for film purposes.

Love happens, feelings are experienced, happiness and joy are felt at every turn. But it does not stop there, letting someone into your life automatically invites their problems in as well. It is an individual choice, so the consequences are faced primarily by that individual. In this movie, Zooni lets Rehaan in, not looking to see his flaws as well. Classic who the heck did I marry scenario, scandalous and satisfying. So, the storyline gets a 7 out of 10 for me, points lost at originality, but still enjoyable in a depressing way.

Things start to spin out of control after she gets her eyesight, and the rest is history if you’re intrigued to watch this movie. I do not think they captured the depth of Zooni getting her eyesight, as not only the whole process seemed a little off at first, but she did not really care about anything but getting to see Rehaan for the first time, which in my opinion was a little absurd. But hey, its romantic films at its peak so fine, forgiven. It gets frustrating over time seeing how overly romantic and in love two people can be (I am not jealous). Is it really like that though? Not a care in the world but where and what your significant other is doing? I doubt it.

Next issue here is the ideal of what is right and what is wrong, which differs for every individual. Everyone has principles they abide by in life and lives their lives according to them. Not even bending much less breaking the ones ingrained in our motor systems. You can see in this film how Zooni and Rehaan have very different principles in life, which is what caused marital wars between them. In fact, that is the case in all marriages in my opinion, you cannot have the all the same opinions with someone genuinely, so different opinions cause a ruckus. Just that the ruckus here was more of a national issue, not just one that resides in their home. I like how the reality of marriage and love was soon brought in, to say that love has to be within boundaries, or the consequences will be serious.

This is what in my opinion drives people of same religions and races to get married to each other. Or how doctors tend to marry other doctors. The misunderstandings, misinformation and miscalculated arguments can bring a marriage to its end. Just like how wars waged are always based on the smallest matters that grow because of the circumstances. Just my food for thoughts. Despite globalization and marriages with other customs, do people still have conventional mindsets and are trying to move along with the current of humanity now?

I also want to dedicate my love for basically most of the songs in this beautiful film. Those are exactly what are playing in my head right now so why not?

I would say this movie is to watch for a solemn tale, not a bright happy one. But still a memorable movie. Romance is a facade, and we are living in a world full of lies. Or are we?
