ANDHADHUN

A series of mysterious events change the life of a blind pianist, who must now report a crime that he should technically know nothing of.

Gut-twisting at its best.

When I first watched this movie, I looked for anyone who had not and pestered them to do so right that moment. It is that good of a movie, for me. I will list down why. Beginning with the plot.

The protagonist being a blind musician was what lured me to watch this, second was the crime element. Really, I do not know anyone who does not enjoy a good crime mystery, especially when it is as suspenseful as this one. The premise of a musician who will go to any boundary to test his musical abilities to become a prodigy someday is a deep one, for how far could one possibly go for their career?

The acting deserves a round of applause. For the leads, especially Ayushmann and Tabu. I cannot imagine how hard it is to actually act as a blind person, and I do not think it could be an easy feat. Not just the movement of the pupils, but also body gestures are not the same. Walking, sitting, even breathing looks different, and that was captured well by both the actor and director. Next, Tabu, being the crazy lady, was exceptional, as she always is. One thing a crazy lady needs, is to be convincing. If you are going to act in a role where you need to make an impact on the audience, the charisma you need to have onscreen is crucial. I am so glad that no one lacked in that factor. The worst thing a movie can do is probably disconnect you from the plotline, especially for thrillers. Engaging the audience is key.
Now, the parts that hit deep. Deceit never ends well. Living a charade, a lie will never outcome well. This does not just apply for the premise of the film. Sometimes, we change things about ourselves, even unknowingly. We do not want people to see us for who we truly are, in some cases, an embarrassment and a disgrace. However, we forget that is what makes us unique in nature. People are different all around and we are too. Someday we will find out our purpose and find our true selves that we have hidden behind a charade that we identify ourselves with. Living a lie will reveal the truth. Like what people always say, truth prevails. I do not know about many, but I may have the habit, if I had to admit, to lie to myself about who I am. This makes me lie to others as well. Consequences, I might not know a single thing about myself that true. Sometimes, I do not even know my preferences, likes and dislikes, as I do not truly know what I like or enjoy doing for myself. Maybe writing, so this blog assignment could be considered as a blessing then for me. Nobody is transparent, nobody can be. Everyone has secrets, mysterious that will forever remain unsolved. That is no problem really, unless they are harmful in nature. I guess this movie can depict what happens to people with harmful secrets.

What would you do in tough situations is also what this film makes one wonder. If you come in contact with a sticky situation, do you try to get out of it or rub yourselves with more sticky-ness? What if there were lives on the line? What if by coming out of such circumstances, it benefits the wrong people for the wrong reasons? Hypothetical as it may sound, we have no idea how many times do we face such situations, where getting ourselves into something, might sound like a bad idea, but in the end benefits us. Simplest examples, club activities. So many to choose from, yet some of us do not take risks on our academics thinking joining so many clubs will risk one factor. But we often forget, the risks we have to take are what keeps us alive, more than others.

In a nutshell, this is a movie that will slap you right across the face with how real it is. I remember thinking to myself about how grateful I was that Bollywood is taking such a huge turn in their film material when I first watched this work of art. For that, watching Andhadhun will take you on a journey, a long one, that ends with a raise of an eyebrow and an open jaw.
