DREAM GIRL

Karamveer gets a job at a call center due to his ability to talk in a woman's voice. He garners a big fan following but soon gets in trouble with his overzealous clients.

Sometimes, all one needs is a romcom. A one with a whacky story.

I think this is one of those movies are not really amazing, but you are happy you watched it. At least that is how I felt. As comedic as this film is, I still noticed certain issue I wanted to point out. But first, the acting, plot and cast.

Ayushmann Khurana played the main role, basically here he is the dream girl. Karam/Pooja as he was in here had the gift of being able to sound like a woman. This ability was then later used to get a job and things start going downhill from there. I really enjoy the premise of men dressing up as women as it is (Kapil Sharma Show reference), but this was a different portrayal of it. There was more depth in the story. As a man, Karam still understood what women go through and feel, not just men. Not many men actually understand the reality of being a woman, especially in the phase where she is young and desirable, how uncomfortable she may get by the mere presence of men. Subtle but noticeable in Ayushmann's character. The rest of the cast was pretty good too, a little loopholes in terms of acting, but then as this is a comedy, most times top notch acting is not needed at all for the humor to come through.

For a basic comedy, I thought this movie had a big wake-up call. Despite globalization, humans are really lonely. Since Karam worked at the call-center, he notices how so many people call complete strangers to talk about their lives, their interests, their bad or good days, their plans for the future and so much more, People rather call up strangers then talk to close ones, friends and family. With so many friends on social media or their virtual lives, they barely have actual people that care about them. That is in fact the sad reality of today's world. We are all lonely but do not want to admit it. We think what we have is good enough, that our social lives are perfect. When, deep down we know a lot of things are wrong. I guess I could put myself in such a category too, shamelessly.

There are so many people that mean so much to me, but I do not know who to talk to. Can I talk to my sister about how nervous I am about not getting through my tests, or will she spill it to my parents? Can I tell my friends how affected I am about my appearance sometimes without them judging me, thinking about how ungrateful I am? Can I tell my parents that sometimes I do not feel happy in the course I am now, or will they end up stressing themselves out? So, I understand why people prefer talking to strangers about certain things. Not only that, when someone actually listens to what you say, and has an interest in your opinions and thoughts, it makes you feel good. This movie takes that good feeling a little further, maybe in a romantic direction, but a funny one.

I think this is a great romcom to just laugh at. A film to change perspectives on things without feeling too heavy on its audience.
