KAPOOR AND SONS
Estranged brothers Rahul and Arjun Kapoor are compelled to
return to their childhood home in Coonoor when their 90-year-old grandfather Amarjeet
suffers a heart attack. Rahul is a successful writer based in London who appears to be the most mature in the
family. Arjun, on the other hand, struggles to get his books published,
resorting to working part-time as a bartender in Newark to make ends meet and writing in his spare
time. Their parents, Harsh and Sunita, favor Rahul for being successful, which
upsets Arjun. While the brothers struggle to get along, their parents grapple
with their troubled marriage. Harsh is discouraging of Sunita's wish to open a
catering business, and his past extramarital affair has blemished their
relationship. While recovering in the hospital, Amarjeet express that his last
wish is to take a family photo titled "Kapoor & Sons, since 1921".
I have 5 words. Family drama is so fun.
This one was a real
rollercoaster. I actually watched it alone in my college dorm while waiting to
go for dinner with my friends. When I tell you how shocked I was with this
movie. I admit it, I expected a shallow romcom. But I was pleasantly surprised.
Few things to highlight here, the plot (twists), the music, the acting and the
Fawad Khan. The plot killed and resurrected me (slight exaggeration). But
really. I wonder why I did not see any of them coming, maybe because my fear is
true, I really am slow at catching facts until they are thrown at me.
First the brother mental
bloodshed. I know how annoying siblings can get. From a first child’s point of
view. But this movie made me realize that it goes both ways (I honestly thought
first kids had it the worst). After leaving the family nest, the sibling
rivalry matures in a different way as well, but I have accepted the fact that
it is here to stay.
Second, the parental problems. What goes on between closed doors between a married couple is top secret, and is never showed, even to next of kin. That is a little creepy, thinking of all the happy couples I have seen, how most of them have unresolved issues with their spouses, but they keep a smile on their faces, nevertheless. Are marriages really like that?
Third, gay rights for
conservative families. I honestly cannot see the day when everyone excepts the
LGBTQ community with open arms, but maybe the future is not as limited as my
imagination. I hope that is the case. Because the thought that people cannot
see that love exists in all shape and form scares me. But other people have
valid mindsets too, that the union between a man and woman is the purest form
of love there is. Everything else is a human fantasy created out of a wild
imagination. I do not want to get into the details, but I see validity in both
arguments. But the issue of accepting these love ideals do not apply to my
family at all, so I do not believe I have a say. But, I do not think it is not
possible. Love is still love.
But nevertheless, it is hard to come out to your family about something like this. Its a degradation in some mindsets, majority I would say. That is the truth, homosexuality is a new phobia, especially for parents of this new generation, the ones who are not really open to such ideals. How do we as a society solve this social issue? I do not think we can, for now. By the way, in this scene, the mother just finds out her son is gay. Yay.
Fourth, the role the elderly people in families play. Yes, they have a massive role. Not just as advisors, but the ones who end up bringing families together. I can relate to that, as my grandparents on both sides are the ones holding the roots of my family tree firm on the ground, calling us for holidays, wishing us on special occasions, reminding us that family is all we have at the end of the day. One day, we are going to take that place and family will make or break us.
