BAJIRAO MASTANI
Short backstory, the Peshwa (prime minister), Bajirao is married to Kashi Bai, but falls for a warrior princess, Mastani. Bajirao then marries Mastani, making her his second wife, despite her being a Muslim and him from Hindu descendants. This story circulates Peshwa Bajirao defending his rightful love for Mastani, and also doesn't stop loving Kashi Bai, although that's not what she feels. The war between religions and principles just sparked more fire in this romance that shook everyone, especially the way it ended (which I'm definitely gonna come to).
The main show stopper's for this piece if definitely the cinematography and directing, by the amazing Sanjay-Leela Bhansali. The lighting, is spectacular. The way the colors are oriented makes this so beautiful to watch.
The second part, are definitely the songs. These songs, randomly play in my mind up to this day. That shows how successful they were when they first came out. Not only the extremely detailed choreography, but also the intoxicating lyrics, that mean so little yet so much. The clothing probably makes me want to be a part of Indian Royalty so bad, because, wow. The jewelry, the makeup, the clothing color coordination, the refined stitch work on every single piece is just, extraordinary, intricately beautiful to look at. Deewani Mastani, Pinga and Malhari are considered the most popular songs in this masterpiece, and I totally agree with it. I will give you the chance to have an opinion on this as well as I am going attach all three songs down here for judgement.
This kind of love maybe very exaggerative for many people (as it should), but for film purposes redeem it to acceptable.
The one thing that I maybe consider as negative feedback for this movie was the ending. It was very, surreal. Do not get me wrong, I indulge in crazy love stories as much as I am a realist, however this was a little much in terms of the "love-legendness" of it. Just my personal opinion. Sometimes, we like real stories, sometimes fantasies. But trying to put them both together in one is pretty challenging, no doubt, and has to be executed to perfection.
All in all, I love war romances and this will always be always be a go-to when I am seeking for a beautiful film to watch, especially visually, so thank you Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
