GULLY BOY

A coming-of-age story based on the lives of street rappers in Mumbai.

I have never misjudged a movie so much in my life.

This film is such a precious one and I finally understand all the hype it has got, and I support the said hype as well. Gully Boy literally translates to Street Boy, and gully is referring to to narrow alleyways in slum areas in India. Movies inspired by true stories, true people who had a dream and made it come true despite their weaknesses are so inspiring to watch. This one is a little different, a story about a boy who loved to rap. It gives me a lot of Slumdog Millionaire vibes, but I love it. Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Siddhant Chaturvedi stole the show with this one. For Ranveer, who is so used to over the top roles, this must have been a challenge, to be a socially awkward kid who wanted nothing but to rap. I really had no issues with any of the actors, for the casting seemed perfect.

One of my favorite lines in this movie is, " I refuse to change my dreams to fit my reality, I will make my reality my dreams". Deep down all of us have something we want to do. Open a business, start a YouTube channel, succeed in a career, make our parents proud, there is no one that lives life without having such goals. Most of us, however, keep these thoughts contained, despite having resources to fulfill our goals. Some of us are afraid, some underestimate themselves, some even have restrictions that do not allow them to walk the path they want. But, in all the success stories we have heard so far, none of them had it easy. All of them took chances, took risks, took opportunities to get to where they are today. All of them were walking the path toward their dream in fear that it may not work out. I am pleased to say that the worst thing that can happen, is that it does not. That is it. Even if that happens, you can pick yourself up and try again. Does not sound so bad does it?

Gully Boy also pictures how chasing dreams can lay you off other dreams you may have had. People that are obsessed with obtaining a certain thing in their existence do not have the rational thought anymore to differentiate right and wrong when it comes to getting the prize. As dangerous as it sounds, it is true. People are blinded with even a little privilege and it can be the end of them. But if they were never obsessed about their dream, chances are they would have never become true. But, how far would you go to obtaining your dream? Can dreams be obtained with just pure hard work and desire in this cruel, harsh world? Or do strings need to be pulled?

As a student, whenever my exam period nears my friends and family always support me, giving me confidence to do well (as they should). However, there are many who forget to look back at the people that helped initially with their success. How many of us remember the people that supported us during our hardest times? How many of us have forgotten all about them? Sacrifices are always made for success, but our loved ones, the people that truly matter are never to be sacrificed for selfish reasons. No matter what people say, those that support you are the most considerate people in your life, and trust me, you never want to lose them along the way no matter how successful you are.

The next best thing about this movie is definitely the music. I still listen to these raps, even when I am not such a big fan of rap. That is when you know the music is good, when people of different preferences suddenly develop a liking for it. Some of these hits are going to be attached her for your viewing, so enjoy.
