3 IDIOTS
Two friends are searching for their long lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them "idiots".
For those of you who have not watched this, honestly, why?
3 idiots was, is and will always be a revelation. So many things happened in this movie that if someone just saw 9 random clips of it he or she would be convinced that it was from 9 different movies. But that is what makes it so memorable in Bollywood. A great movie is usually measured by its plot, acting, music and directing. In that case, this is a great movie.
Now, to the gist. First, the upside down life of a student. Does not matter how old you are, as a student there are expectations that come with it. Understandably so. But sometimes, the pressure can get to a person, and bring about undesirable consequences. As a university student, I can see what the fuss is all about. It is really stressful to have to keep up with each semester for 3 years at minimum and maintain a good score to get a degree. Not anyone can do it, so when people say everyone in today's era has a degree, I think that is the understatement of the century. The expectations are enough to kill, if you do not know how to handle yourself. Suicide rates of student are sky rocketing by the year for those of you unaware, it is a crisis. Even adults can feel their life is out of control sometimes, and time their greatest enemy. This movie offers a rather interesting perspective of how we should not think of tomorrow and how we are going to succeed in the future, because what truly matters is now.
Next, dreams. We are all given the freedom to dream, to have a goal for ourselves. There are two types of dreamers. One that leave the dreams as they are, and the other that realize it is not that far to reach that dream and go for it. Dreams are what keep us alive and breathing. Is it worth throwing all that away because of societal expectations, parental advice, scholarship requirements, or even friendly advice stating that it is not worth it? Maybe, but maybe not either. We need to be bold. If we keep hiding under a rock, not wanting to own our dreams, because we are afraid they might hurt the people we love, then we will never forgive ourselves. One day might come when we look back and think, what if, I had just done it? What if? Do not ever let yourself become someone who lives a "what if" life.
Life as a student is full of surprises. I am yet to learn it, the magic of college life. The infamous "college days" that our elders ramble on about. The people we meet, the places we go to, the food we eat, the feelings that come with it, these are going to be our fondest memories before we step into adulthood. I am not saying it will never get better than that, I am simply saying that these times are unique. Watching this movie made me appreciate these golden moments I am living through right now, never wanting to look back in 20 years thinking I never had fun.
This movie is like a box of chocolates (Forrest Gump reference but its alright). You never know which chocolate tastes sweeter than the other. The emotional rollercoaster this movie is sometimes makes me truly wonder if there are people that exist that believe this is not a good movie. It is not. It is exceptional.
