KABHIE KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM
After marrying a poor woman, rich Rahul is disowned by his father and moves to London to build a new life. Years later, his now grown up little brother Rohan embarks on a mission to bring Rahul back home and reunite the family again.
The true face of Bollywood, now and forevermore.
If Bollywood had to describe itself in four words we know it will be Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham. Which literally translates to sometimes happiness, sometimes sadness. Yes, the philosophy of my life. Yin and Yang, there's always a balance.
I always heard how if one is too happy, sadness will strike and vice versa. Is that true?
We all know KKKG is watched for the four hour therapy session it offers, which makes us feel instantly better after it is over. I watched this movie so many times as a kid, yet can never get bored of it. The acting reminds me of how so little could make us so happy, the music sings the melodies of home and comfort, the storyline, an absolute classic.
But, there is a lot this film trying to say, indirectly (of course). Life is full of ups and downs, but in all of it family comes first. Family is what we have that is above everything else, or should be. I do not dare disagree because, yes, family has always and will always be there through your toughest times if you allow them to. In older, simpler times, family was all one had. You protect your family and your kids grow up to protect you in the circle of life. It still is that way. Maybe modern ages have made family look like something more fragile. Something that is less of a lifelong bond, more of a responsibility. Not entirely wrong, seeing the divorce rates in millions of families all around the world. But then again, in Indian culture, family is equivalent to God. They will be there through thick and thin, and one can never, ever disobey family. Traditions like these still continue until today. People might not say it openly, but family ties are for life. No matter how modern we get we will still look back at our families every now and then.
Next morale is forgiveness. What the entire movie revolves around. To human is to err. Mistakes are made and no matter how severe they are, one should never completely neglect they fact that they have happened. For doing that buries the guilt deep within, and someday it will have to find a way out. Keeping things to yourself can never end well, yet we do it anyway. It becomes much harder to accept mistakes and ask for forgiveness, causing us to live in denial. Denial is not a man's best friend. For we know, to move on, we have to accept our flaws. If we do not forgive ourselves, how can we expect others to do so?
Everyone who knows KKKG knows the thing that stands out like a sore, beautiful thumb in this classic is the music. So, here you go.
So, putting the puzzle together we now know. Bollywood is a vibrant city, with musical numbers at every corner and beautiful people walking about everywhere, dancing to the beat to perfection and its crazy. But that is how I love it, and will always appreciate these golden classics until I cease to exist.
