BADLA
I find this premise captivating in
every sense, a classic whodunit.
Badla (Translation: Revenge) is a
2019 Indian Hindi-language thriller film directed by Sujoy Ghosh and starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Amrita Singh as the main actors.
The film is produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and
Azure Entertainment and is a remake of the 2016 Spanish film The Invisible Guest.
The film was released on 8 March 2019, and it has grossed
over ₹138.49 crore (US$19 million)
worldwide against a production budget of ₹10 crore (US$1.4 million)
to emerge as a commercial success.
Even though it was a remake we all know how easily remakes can
go wrong if they are overdone. I think that’s the beauty of this story, despite
being a remake this kind of plot can never get boring.
A few things that I want to point out here that I find
exceptional as a film fanatic myself is the acting. Typically, Bollywood movies
are were always known for being at large scales, with at least the whole
population of India in all of them. However, Badla only has two main characters,
and the whole movie revolves around their deep conversation in search of the identity
of the murderer. The sheer talent it requires for the actors to engage the
audience for over an hour without the premise falling flat is unimaginable.
This film did not disappoint in that aspect at all.
I do not even see it fit to comment too much on Amitabh Bachchan’s
acting as it was insanely incredible. Maybe because he had played the part of an
attorney before in Pink, which also stars Taapsee Pannu in one of the leads.
Maybe that’s why the whole act was so believable. But the chemistry these two
have is off the charts. The fact that most of the movie was shot in that same
room with these two walking around and talking, and how that in itself made me
hold my breath the entire time is indeed a skill that the director, Sujoy Ghosh
has mastered. He managed to make the crowd want more, if that does not signify
a successful movie, I don’t know what does.
This is a clip of a conversation between the two main’s that I believe summarises in a nutshell how engaging they truly are on-screen.
The second part of the movie to talk about it the plot twists. Who does not love a good plot twist? This film is oozing with them. In a murder movie, especially one where the audience has no clue who did it, the scenes have to be really precise, so it does not break the attention of the audience. The method used here to twist the plot and the audience hearts and guts is a repetitive one. Throughout the story, the woman accused, Naina explains what happened and everything is her point of view, until Badal Gupta questions her and has his own scenarios, his own thoughts on what actually happened. They have a verbal war, trying to show who is more valid and rational, which story makes more sense, because at the end of the day, in a murder case, the lawyer’s job is to ensure his/her client does not go to prison. If I even state one plot twist it will undoubtedly ruin the film for anyone so, zip.
The only weird bit maybe that I think could have been given more impact was the ending. For those who know, you know. If you do not, I implore you, go watch this.
In short, after this movie was released, I recommended it to
almost anyone looking for something to watch. This masterpiece is great, not
only for a mystery and thriller preferring audience, but anyone. That’s what I
think is this movie’s greatest advantage. After all, who does not love a good
mystery and sit there after its solved, wanting more?
